Which Industrial Door Has the Best Quality? “The Price per Kilo Never Lies!”

Per Fimmerstad wants the industrial door with the best price per kilogram

Per Fimmerstad at Mälarturf in Nykvarn has a foolproof method to determine which industrial door has the best quality.

"I want to buy what I believe is cheapest over time, and that is never the same as the lowest purchase price. But the price per kilo never lies," says Per.

Per has run a farm since the turn of the millennium. A few years ago he acquired Mälarturf, which cultivates and sells turf (roll‐grass) to consumers, municipalities, and businesses throughout Greater Stockholm.

Most Things Cost SEK 55 per Kilo

As a farmer, he sees life in 25-year cycles. Whatever he invests in, he looks at the price per kilo.

"It doesn''t matter whether it''s cars, tractor tires, airplanes or industrial doors. Most things cost 55 SEK per kilo, then you multiply by three and that gives the market price," says Per, who previously worked partly with design and product testing.

You Can Build More Cheaply by Cutting Down on Material

When Mälarturf recently expanded their operations with a new workshop, wash hall, and cold storage hall, Per needed to invest in seven industrial doors, and was recommended by a colleague to check out Torverk.
His first question: How much do they weigh?

"Previously I have bought doors from a competing firm, but they felt flimsy already when installed, and that is not a good sign. But Torverk''s doors feel solid, and aren''t more expensive per kilo than other suppliers. Of course it''s possible to build a cheaper door — just cut down on material," says Per.

He Wants to Buy Things That Don''t Cost Too Much to Own

What''s most important to Per is that the doors work as hassle-free as possible for a long time.

"We have 24 machines running day in and day out. That''s already enough things that break, so I don''t want to spend time repairing troublesome doors too. I only do business with people I like, and want to buy things that don''t cost too much to own. These doors feel tight and solid so I assume the U-value is good, and that reasonable maintenance suffices to keep them functioning over time," Per explains.

The Installation Speaks for Itself

His own mechanics will handle service, but Torverk carried out the installation.

"The installations are neat, done by skilled installers. Often that correlates with the quality of the products," says Per.

Continued Expansion

Demand for roll‐grass is high, and Mälarturf is growing by leaps and bounds. The biggest challenge now is keeping up with strong demand. So Per continues expanding — building a new boiler, then adding customer reception and new staff facilities. For Per, Mälarturf is a perfect complement to food production.

"It''s tough to make money in farming. Food production is under a lot of pressure, but as soon as you grow something you can''t eat, it''s easier to earn money on it," he concludes.
